The Wineskin Manifesto

As editors of the Wineskin, we believe that art, prose, and poetry are crucial to creating community, celebrating beauty, and defending what it means to be human. We are created in the image of God and are invited to be creators ourselves. We strive to encourage personal and meaningful art and provide a medium for it to be shared with and enjoyed by the world. We want our journal to welcome art that glorifies Christ by doing the following.

  • the good, the beautiful, and the true.

    We believe that art is a reflection of who God is and can be an act of worship to God. There is still good in the world, and we want to find it.

  • authentic and truthful expression.

    While we want to celebrate what is good, we also believe in being honest about life’s challenges. The truest art often comes out of emotional turmoil or tension.

  • various creative mediums.

    Creativity and beauty can take place in many forms and we want to be inclusive of many different forms of expression.

  • the human experience.

    We are a defense of why authentic human art and human words matter. We want our collections to show why bother with the work, even if there are machines or programs to do them for us.

  • Jesus Christ.

    We believe this can be done explicitly in the art, prose, and poetry we collect, but also implicitly in the act of curating a beautiful collection. Collecting and organizing beautiful works of art is a way we can imitate our Creator and point to Him in so doing.
